“This is the pinnacle event in the solo offshore sailing calendar. The race takes place every four years and is a circumnavigation in an easterly direction, without assistance and non-stop.
With only 27 places available, sailors plan years in advance to qualify for a place. Everyone starts the race but not all competitors make the finish line. The French have dominated this race but this year does see nearly half the fleet with different nationalities. The biggest surprise is the fact that seven of the possible entrants for the race are British. Could we be finally addressing the balance and questioning the French domination for the event?
